Nur Hazirah blazes Sukma lanes for third gold

KUCHING: Sarawak continued their dominance in bowling at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) with a 1-2 finish in the mixed doubles today.

Nur Hazirah Ramli teamed up with Tsen Fan Yew to secure her place as the alley queen, recording a total of 2,547 pinfalls at Megalane Sarawak @ Emart in Batu Kawa for her third gold medal.

Compatriots Ihsan Fikri Suffian and Claudia Kumang Jakson won silver with 2,476 pinfalls, while Penang's Hafiz Darwisy Azhlan and Nur Sara Shahira Firdaus completed the podium on 2,462.

Knowing he would partner with Nur Hazirah, Fan Yew was confident of a podium finish.

"I was confident I would be on the podium today as I could count on Nur Hazirah. We did face some challenges but rebounded after that," said the 21-year-old Fan Yew.

It was Fan Yew's second gold medal after winning the team event at the 2018 Perak edition.

Nur Hazirah has now earned RM45,000 with her three gold medals.

The Sarawak government offers RM15,000 to state athletes for each gold medal.

"I don't want to think about the money. I will just save it for my future. I may continue my studies and bowl at the same time. However, I will make a decision next year," said Nur Hazirah, who will also compete in the women's trios, team, and masters events.
