KUCHING: Sarawak are closing in on the overall taekwondo title at the Malaysia Games (Sukma) after securing 11 gold medals after three days of competition.
After sweeping seven gold medals in the opening two days of the taekwondo event, Sarawak won another four titles at Unity Stadiu. in Kuching on Sunday.
The roaring support from the home crowd helped Sarawak clinch the gold medal in the women's over 73kg category through Pretty Amisha Amanda, who defeated Selangor's Nurul Aesyah Aqilah Sukeri.
The bronze medals went to Negri Sembilan's Nur Iffah Dielaila Fadrol Razman and Perak's L. Roshini.
Sarawak also dominated the men's over 87kg category, with Zulhafiz Zulhadi securing the gold by defeating Lim Jia Wei from the Federal Territories.
Perlis' N. Puarasen and Negri Sembilan's M Balakkrishnan had to settle for bronze.
Sarawak's Puteri Durratun Zulaikha Samat won gold in the women's under 73kg event, while the silver went to Terengganu's Fu Chervyn.
The bronze medals were won by Penang's G Sarveis and the FT's Adleyna Natashya S.R. Mansor.
Sarawak's Aj Yang Yi Ong confirmed his victory in the men's under 87kg category, winning gold after defeating the FT's Nur Putra Adam Azlan Noor Azlan.
Kedah's Nor Adam Shamsul Anuar and Perlis' Yaasvin Kumar Rameas took home the bronze.
Meanwhile, Perlis' Nadia Aina Syazwani Ishak managed to break Sarawak's dominance by winning gold in the women's under 67 kg category. Nadia Aina Syazwani defeated Sarawak's Christine Ying, who had to settle for silver.
The bronze medals were claimed by Johor's Febrika Sasnita Dewi Jujur Mayon and Perak's Lee Hui Yee.
Keng Xian Hong, representing FT, won gold in the men's under 80 kg category, with silver going to Negri Sembilan's Adam Hafiz Azman. The bronze medals in this category were won by Kedah's Hafzan Mohd Salleh and Sarawak' Soon Hian Chai.
