Yiat Qing fights through pain barrier to win springboard title

KUCHING: Sea Games champion Lee Yiat Qing made amends by winning her first Malaysia Games (Sukma) gold medal at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre today.

Yiat Qing, representing the Federal Territories, had surprisingly missed out on the women's 10m platform title — the event she won at last year's Phnom Penh Sea Games — on Wednesday.

However, the 16-year-old made no mistakes today, clinching the 3m springboard title with 231.20 points.

She finished ahead of Sarawakian divers Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin (228.25) and Nur Eilisha Rania Abrar Raj (225.70).

On Wednesday, Yiat Qing narrowly missed the 10m platform title, losing to Sarawak's Nurul Farisya Alia Affendi by 0.80 points.

"Frankly, I did not aim for anything in the platform as I am still recovering from a right wrist injury.

"Throughout the months, I could not give my all in training in the platform discipline due to the injury," said Yiat Qing.

She added that the injury did not affect her much in the 3m springboard event. "Despite winning the springboard title, I am still not satisfied. I have a problem with not translating what I learn in training into competitions. I need to be more consistent," she said.

Yiat Qing's victory in the springboard event broke Sarawak's dominance in the women's diving discipline.

She will now prepare for the national trials in September for next year's World Junior Championships.

In the mixed 10m platform synchro event, Sarawak secured their ninth gold medal through Lutfir Rahman Razak-Nurul Farisya Alia Affendi (234.66).

Perak's Megat Azim Hakimi Megat Nor Ismail-Cecelia Olivia (209.94) and FT's Ng Jia Gee-Nurqayyum Nazmi Nazim (203.97) finished second and third, respectively.

The diving competition concluded today with Sarawak topping the medal standings with nine golds, three silvers, and two bronzes, followed by FT (3-4-4) and Terengganu (0-2-3).
