KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aquatics diving technical director Bryan Nickson Lomas is satisfied with the performances of Lee Yiat Qing and Nurul Farisya Alia Affendi in the girls' synchronised 10m platform final at the World Junior Championships in Rio de Janeiro yesterday.
Bryan had set a top-five target for Malaysian divers at the meet in Rio, and Yiat Qing-Nurul did just that.
Sea Games champion Yiat Qing, 16, partnered Malaysia Games champion Farisya, 15, to fifth place in Rio with a total score of 246.12 points from five dives. They were 30.18 points behind gold medallists Abigail Gonzalez Roel-Rut Elisa Paez Manjarrez of Mexico. Australia's Ellie Cole-Ruby Drogemuller (275.76) were second and Britain's Hannah Newbrook-Maisie Bond (275.16) were third.
Bryan said: "There are still things that they can improve on, but overall, I'm happy with their performances. Their score in the final is better than what they did in simulations before the competition."
In the boys' 3m springboard, Nurqayyum Nazmi Nazim and Yap Rui Jie managed only eighth place after posting a total of 246.30 in the 17-pair final.
In the mixed 3m and 10m team event, Malaysia's quartet of Farisya, Yiat Qing, Elvis Priestly Clement and Jared Aiden Harold finished sixth in the 14-team final with a total score of 314.20.
