Wushu queen Cheong Min dominates at Taolu World Cup

KUALA LUMPUR: Wushu queen Tan Cheong Min dazzled to clinch gold in the women's nangun event at the Taolu World Cup in Yokohama, Japan, today.

Cheong Min topped the event with 9.770 points, edging out He Jianxin of Hong Kong, who took silver with 9.756 points and Vietnam's Ni Dang Tran Phuong, who claimed bronze with 9.646.

It was a satisfying victory as she outperformed the gold and silver medallists from last year's World Championships in Texas, United States.

It was also her first World Cup triumph.

With this win, Cheong Min has now reached the podium in every major wushu championship.

Cheong Min won the nandao event at the 2019 World Championships in Shanghai and secured double gold at the 2023 Phnom Penh Sea Games. Last year, she also delivered Malaysia's only wushu medal—a silver—at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Just last month, she bagged gold in the nandao event at the Asian Championships in Macau.

Malaysia also celebrated a silver medal from Calvin Lee, who scored 9.760 in the men's nandao, while Wong Weng Son took bronze in the changquan category with 9.780 points. Pang Pui Yee narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in the women's jianshu event with 9.756 points, behind China (9.796), Vietnam (9.773), and Hong Kong (9.766).
