KUALA LUMPUR: National wushu exponent Wong Weng Son concluded what is likely to be his final Taolu World Cup appearance on a high after winning gold in the men's jianshu event in Yokohama today (Oct 27).
Weng Son's routine scored 9.773 points from the judges which was enough to secure him victory. Exponents from Japan (9.766) and Nepal (9.636) settled for silver and bronze.
It was the 32-year-old's second medal of the competition after earlier winning the changquan bronze yesterday.
Weng Son has now won four World Cup gold medals throughout his career as he previously won the jianshu gold at the 2016 (China) and 2018 (Myanmar) editions. He also won the qiangshu gold in 2018.
National coach Koo Chee Zhong disclosed that Weng Son is planning to retire from the national team after almost two decades in the sport.
"He has been an inspiration to the team through his work ethic and determination," said Chee Zong.
Tan Cheong Min also did well to finish on the women's nanquan podium today after scoring 9.770 in the event. Indonesia claimed the gold on 9.773 while Hong Kong (9.760) completed the podium.
Cheong Min yesterday won the nangun gold to give Malaysia its first gold of the meet.
Pang Pui Yee also claimed silver in the women's qiangshu today after scoring 9.746. Exponents from Hong Kong (9.753) and Macau (9.743) claimed gold and bronze.
Malaysian exponents thus ended their campaign in Yokohama with a two gold, three silver and two bronze haul.
