Swimmers Puong Wei, Ananda break national records at World Cup

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian swimmers continued to set short course national records at the Singapore World Cup yesterday at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

This time, it was Hii Puong Wei's turn to rewrite the men's 200m individual medley record.

The 21-year-old held off a charging Khiew Hoe Yean in Heat 3 of the preliminary round to record one minute 59.60 seconds to better the previous mark of 2:00.73s set by Jayden Tan at the National Short Course Championships in July.

Hoe Yean's time of 1:59.97s sees him joining Puong Wei as the only Malaysians to swim the 200m IM in under two minutes. However, the duo did not make the final in Singapore.

Ananda Lim also joined the record-breaking party, smashing the 100m freestyle mark with 48.93s. The 24-year-old obliterated Terence Ng's mark of 49.02s set at the National Championships in July, and became the first Malaysian to swim the event in under 49 seconds.

On Thursday, Hoe Yean torpedoed the men's 400m freestyle national record and Chui Lai Kwan set a new mark in the women's 50m freestyle.
