SRG aim to take the 'Golden Road'

KUALA LUMPUR: The biggest and most elusive prize in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) eSports is achieving the "Golden Road".

To achieve the Golden Road, which is akin to the calendar Grand Slam in tennis, an MLBB team must win all the four major titles in a season.

They are the Opening League Split, the Mid Season Cup (MSC), the Closing League Split and the M Series World Championships.

Caster and analyst Amirul Aiman "Laphel" Kamal said that teams have been trying to achieve the Golden Road for years but none have succeeded.

"Every time a team got close to completing it, they stumbled at the final hurdle.

"I'm pretty sure the teams and the players feel the pressure from their fans, organisations, and their own country.

"Getting close to achieving the Golden Road puts a target on your back where other teams will put you under a microscope to find your mistakes so that they can exploit them.

"That is why it has never been done before," said Amirul, who has been a caster and analyst for five years.

Three teams — Blacklist International (the Philippines), RRQ Akira (Brazil) and Fnatic Onic (Indonesia) — have tried and failed.

Selangor Red Giants will be the latest team to attempt the Golden Road after winning Season 13 and 14 of the MLBB Professional League Malaysia and the Mid Season Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in July.

They will have home ground advantage with the M6 World Championships beginning with the Swiss stage at the IOI Grand Exhibition and Convention Centre in Putrajaya on Thursday.

"SRG's chances of achieving the Golden Road are high. They're here on their home ground with a lot of support.

"But on the other hand, there is also a big chance that they could only get top-three because the teams here are so strong.

"But I can't imagine what would happen if they do achieve it, that would be the biggest thing that happens in MLBB history.

"The fans will surely be very proud, and I'm pretty sure they will never stop talking about it," Amirul added.

If SRG survive the Swiss stage, which ends on Dec 5, they will enter the knockout stage, culminating with the Grand Finals at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Dec 15.
