Speedster Sayyid out to topple Thai nemesis

KUALA LUMPUR: Sukma champion Sayyid Amin Roslan aims to get the better of Asian junior champion Wirayut Daenkhanob of Thailand in the boys' 200m at the Sea Under-18 Athletics Championships which begin tomorrow at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu.

At last year's Sea Championships in Bangkok, Wirayut set a new meet record by clocking 21.35s to win gold while Sayyid had to settle for silver with 21.56. Wirayut also won the 100m gold with 10.67.

Penangite Sayyid has a personal best of 20.94 in the 200m, registered at the national schools meet in Ipoh last month. He ran 21.21 in the Sukma in Kuching in August.

Wirayut will start as the favourite as he has clocked 20.84 at the Under-20 Asian Junior Championships in Doha, Qatar, in April.

Coach Shukor Ishak said: "On paper Wirayut looks to be the favourite but it will be an interesting race. I hope Sayyid can outrun the Thai and win the gold."

Johor's Sukma 100m gold medallist Danish Iftikhar Roslee will not compete in the Sea Championships due to SPM exams, but Sukma silver medallist Danish Irfan Tamrin of Selangor will take part instead.
