Sprinter Sayyid stuns Thai champion in Sea event

KUALA LUMPUR: Sukma champion Sayyid Amin Roslan upstaged defending champion Wirayut Daenkhanob of Thailand to win the boys' 200m gold in the Sea Under-18 Athletics Championships at Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu today (Nov 30).

Sayyid also set a new meet record of 21.29 seconds. The 17-year-old from Penang erased Wirayut's record of 21.35 set in Bangkok last year.

Wirayut settled for silver in 21.53 while Thai Chutithat Pruksorranan bagged the bronze (21.73) Sayyid said the 200m final was delayed by one hour due to heavy rain, but it was a good omen for him.

"Despite the wet track, I ran as fast as I could. I won the gold for my mother and I thank my coach (Shukor Ishak) as I won't be able to do it without his guidance."

Malaysia's Rico Andrew (14.21m) and Khairul Naim Nizamuddin (14.15m) won gold and silver in the boys' triple jump with A. Phisorn Chuayjamnaek of Thailand (14.13m) settling for bronze.

Nabil Faiz Ayub won the boys' hammer throw with a distance of 59.17m while another Malaysian, Solomon Ng, (55.77m) bagged the bronze. Thailand's Haritchai Kongtuk (56.23m) settled for silver.

In the girls' high jump, Mai Ngoc Anh of Vietnam won gold with a leap of 1.68m while the Malaysian duo of Nolaeska Kipolos (1.59m) and Nur Sabrina Najwa Efrudin (1.55m) bagged silver and bronze respectively.
