Yasshmita finishes second in Northern Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's world No. 83 Yasshmita Jadish Kumar's hope of winning the US$12,000 Northern Open title in Manchester, England, was dashed by Zeina Zein of Egypt in the final yesterday.

The University of West England squash player gave a good fight before going down 11-7, 5-11, 14-12, 2-11, 6-11 in 46 minutes.

In the semi-finals, fifth seed Yasshmita upset Egypt's world No. 75 Nour Megahed 11-9, 14-12, 11-8.

In October, Yasshmita lost in the final to Akanksha Salunkhe of India in the Open de Couzeix/Limogos in France.

Yasshmita, 20, said though she didn't win yesterday, she was happy to end the year on a high with two 12k finals.

"For the Northern Open, I did pretty well as I was seeded fifth.

"I am finally done playing in tournaments this year but I can't wait to get back to work and come back stronger in tournaments next year," said Yasshmita, who is coached by John Welton in Bristol.
