INDONESIA ranks among countries with the highest number of Covid-19 deaths among health workers.
This was revealed by Amnesty International Indonesia executive director Usman Hamid, who urged for more attention given to the needs of health frontliners in the crisis, according to Tempo.co.
Usman expressed hope that the government would help provide better personal protective equipment (PPE) and other health facilities for frontliners carrying out their duties.
He said Amnesty International has recorded the Covid-19 deaths of 181 medical workers in Indonesia in the last six months. The casualties comprise 112 doctors and 69 nurses.
"With this number, Indonesia is in the ranks of countries with the highest mortality rate for health workers in the world," Usman said over the weekend.
Usman said globally, Amnesty International recorded at least 7,000 medical workers dying after contracting Covid-19.
The countries with the highest Covid-19 health worker mortality rates are Mexico with 1,320 deaths, the United States with 1,077 deaths, India with 573 casualties, Brazil with 324 casualties, and South Africa with 240 deaths.
As of Saturday, the Health Ministry announced 3,128 new confirmed Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 190,665. The death toll stood at 7,940.
