MANILA: A radio commentator, known for his hard-hitting style, was shot dead in front of his house by two masked gunmen in Macanhan, Carmen.
The deceased, Federico "Ding" Gempesaw, 63, was shot twice by the suspects, who fled the scene on a motorcycle, the Philstar.com portal reported.
According to a police report, Gempesaw had just stepped out of his car, which he used as a taxi, when one of the assailants fired at him at close range.
A witness told investigators that although wounded, the victim managed to wrestle with one of the suspects before a second bullet hit him in the head. He died at the scene.
Police said they recovered empty shells of an unknown gun calibre at the site and that the suspects fled on a motorcycle that had no license plate.
Gempesaw, who hosted the block time programme "Bitayan sa kahanginan" daily over local broadcaster Radyo Natin, was known as a hard-hitting commentator.
He was a retired city hall official before he joined the local media.
Police investigating the case said they have yet to establish the motive for the killing.
