Missing ALS Clivia crewman's body recovered at Tanjung Pelepas Port, 7 hours after falling overboard

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The body of a missing ALS Clivia crewman was recovered yesterday at the Tanjung Pelepas Port in Gelang Patah, seven hours after he fell overboard.

The Bangladeshi crewman identified as Miah Md Ujjal, 35, was thrown overboard the Liberia-registered vessel due to strong wind and rough sea while working onboard the vessel which was docked at the port.

His body was found at 6.32pm. He plummeted from a height of six metres from the ship into the sea.

Fire and Rescue department operations commander Mohd Khairi Zainuddin, said its Water Rescue Unit had conducted search and rescue efforts to recover the victim who was feared drowned.

However, they were forced to bring the mission to a halt when the strong currents threatened the divers' safety.

"The operations then resumed after the sea conditions were calmer.

"The victim's body was found floating, some six metres away from where he fell," he said, adding the body was handed over to the police to facilitate investigations.

Earlier, the New Straits Times, reported that a Bangladeshi crewman was thrown overboard while working on the docked container ship before he is believed to have slipped and fallen into the sea.
