SUBANG JAYA: Touch 'n Go Group (TnG) and Shell Malaysia will enable RFID payment in 200 Shell stations by December, with plans to have at lest 50 per cent of its stations to be RFID-ready in the following year.
Officially operational in 88 Shell stations at present, the cashless payment system will be expanded nationwide with a focus on the north and south region of the peninsula.
Speaking at the operation's official launch, Shell Mobility Malaysia and Singapore general manager Seow Lee Ming said it had received positive response with the installation from over 10,000 pilot users over the last year.
Seow is confident that the collaboration with TnG will further enhance Shell's customer experience as the two companies have been working closely to continuously optimise the technology to ensure a truly hassle-free payment experience.
"In line with our commitment in making our customers' daily journeys more seamless through innovative offerings, we embarked on this partnership with Touch 'n Go to develop a new payment method that provides cashless convenience, using RFID technology, without hassle of a mobile app.
"We also went the extra mile to integrate Touch 'n Go with our loyalty partner BonusLink, allowing customers to earn loyalty points easily with each fuel purchase," Seow added.
Without providing investment figures, TnG Group chief executive officer Effendy Shahul Hamid said the combination of a RFID and eWallet infrastructure allowed it to expand its use case beyond tolling which was the previous focus of its promotion for use.
The delay in the system's implementation, he said, was to ensure the system's efficiency post-test and its feasibility as an additional use for refueling payment will justify RFID's expansion into other areas as they move forward.
"We are fortunate to have found a like-minded partner in Shell, who aligns with our ambition to provide customers with a cashless and contactless driving experience.
"They are helping us pave the way towards delivering more innovative offerings for both sets of our customers," he added.
To use the service, customers will need a TnG RFID tag linked to their TnG eWallet - with a one-time registration and activation through the app.
Upon the activation's success, customers simply need to park their car at the designated bays and have payment auto-deducted from the customer's TnG eWallet.
Similarly any unutilised amount will be immediately refunded to the customer's TnG eWallet account.
Shell and TnG will be rewarding cashback to the first 25,000 customers who use the RFID payment method from Aug 10 to Sept 16.
Eligible first-time customers will receive a RM10 cashback with a minimum pump of RM50 on their first TnG RFID transaction.
