KUALA LUMPUR: Gamuda Bhd has bagged a RM3.05 billion contract for a hydroelectric project in Sabah.
Gamuda today said it had received a letter of award from Upper Padas Power Sdn Bhd to act as the total development contractor (TDC) for the 187.5 megawatt (MW) hydroelectric project in Tenom and Sipitang, Sabah.
The project will be undertaken in collaboration with Conlay Construction Sdn Bhd.
"The TDC contract sum is RM3.048 billion. Work is expected to begin immediately with a scheduled commercial operation date to be on or before Dec 31, 2030.
"The TDC will be undertaken by an unincorporated joint venture comprising Gamuda and Conlay, of which Gamuda and Conlay shall have 75 per cent and 25 per cent interests respectively," it noted.
According to Gamuda, the scope of work includes the project's design, construction, testing and commissioning of roller-compacted concrete dam, a main and secondary powerhouses, water conveyance system, project access and other permanent facilities.
This includes a 275 kilovolt (kV) switchyard, 33kV sub-transmission line, workshop, stores and operation facilities and a residential village.
Upon completion, the project will deliver an average of 1,052 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of clean energy per annum, increasing Sabah's current dependable capacity by about 15 per cent.
"This will double the renewable energy mix to support the state's aim to achieve approximately 35 per cent renewable energy share in its generation mix by 2035," it noted.
On Dec 7 last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor officiated the project's groundbreaking ceremony in Tenom.
