#TECH: The lens that films in virtual reality

CANON has unveiled a revolutionary lens, designed to capture stereoscopic 3D 180-degree virtual reality (VR180) imagery in ultra-high definition. Due out by the end of the year, the lens is intended for use with the most advanced mirrorless cameras, starting with Canon's EOS R5.

Canon intends to revolutionise VR180 content recording with the RF 5.2mm F2.8L Dual Fisheye lens. For the moment, the only digital interchangeable lens camera powerful enough to use it is the recent Canon EOS R5, a very high-end mirrorless model. The two together will be able to capture extremely high-quality 3D imagery.

This is, in fact, a twin fisheye lens with two separate optical systems, each with an ultra-wide field of view of 190 degrees for optimal image capture and natural rendering in virtual-reality mode. The device's two fisheyes each incorporate two UD glass lenses. The bright maximum aperture of F2.8 can be particularly effective in low light, and the lens is capable of image capture in up to 8K resolution.

This will provide professionals with a tool for creating 3D content in a very simple way. In addition, Canon is offering a sophisticated software solution (EOS VR Utility) and a plug-in for Adobe Premiere Pro (EOS VR Plug-in) to optimise the post-production process.

The Canon RF5.2mm F2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens is scheduled to be available in late December 2021 for an estimated retail price of US$1,999 (RM8,200). The Canon EOS R5 is currently priced at around US$3,900 for the body only.
