#TECH: 'Mai Kita Cashless' helps Kedah rural community go cashless

KUALA LUMPUR: Through the Touch 'n Go eWallet, Touch 'n Go (TNG) Group and Payment Network Malaysia (PayNet) have launched the 'Mai Kita Cashless' campaign to enable rural Kedah merchants and consumers to embrace the cashless payment method.

Launched on July 16 at Pasar Tani Kekal in Changlun, Kedah, the campaign was officiated by Kubang Pasu District Office, Kedah's chief assistant district officer, Mohd Khairul Nizam Abd Latif, TNG eWallet's chief commercial officer, Danny Chua, and PayNet Ecosystem Development's head, Heliziana Madzin.

The three villages the campaign focuses on are Kampung Baru Changloon, Kampung Paya Nongmi, and Kampung Tradisi Lembah Keriang.

TNG Digital's chief executive officer, Alan Ni said the campaign encourages urban cashless practice in rural areas via technology.

"We started this initiative with PayNet as we want to provide the opportunity and platform to the rural communities in Malaysia, starting with Changlun in the Northern territory, to use and benefit from Touch 'n Go eWallet and DuitNow QR," he said.

The campaign not only supports the government's efforts in advocating cashless payments but also develops a cashless society among the rural communities, and educates and enhances their understanding of the new payment method.

"This collaboration with PayNet allows us to extend a seamless, fast, convenient, and safe platform with DuitNow QR for merchants and consumers in Changlun, Kedah. We believe this partnership will help to fortify all merchants, as well as consumers in improving the economy in this area," he added.

Over 300 Pasar Tani Kekal merchants are encouraged to convert into TNG eWallet and DuitNow QR as a payment method.

PayNet's chief executive officer, Farhan Ahmad said their partnership with TNG Digital is bringing benefits to Changlun as a part of their 'Project Cashless Kampung' initiative.

"Since DuitNow QR is the common QR code for the country, consumers can use it to make cashless payments across Changlun regardless of the bank or eWallet they want to use. We hope this initiative will spur economic growth in the area by making commerce more seamless and reducing the cost and hassle of managing cash," Farhan said.

From August 31, 2022, those who use TNG eWallet by scanning the DuitNow QR code at Pasar Tani Kekal Changlun and the areas around it can enjoy an RM5 cashback for every transaction, with a minimum transaction sum of RM10.

Merchants who sign up by then will get RM20 upon 10 transactions

The 'Mai Kita Cashless' campaign will go on until Dec 31, 2022.
