#TECH: Technology key criterion in hospitality industry

TRAVELLERS' expectations are growing more sophisticated each day, and due to this, hotels are faced with the challenge of staying ahead of the curve.

According to InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, general manager Matthew Everson, modern travellers value the role of technology.

"Today's travellers are increasingly selective, seeking more than just a place to sleep. They are more sophisticated in choosing hotels," he said.

"They're looking for an experience that aligns with their lifestyle, work needs, and personal preferences. It's about those personalised touches that make a stay memorable," he added.

Technology is key

Everson said for modern hotels, keeping up with technological advancements is essential.

"Technology is crucial, particularly for corporate travellers," he said.

"Guests expect hotels to offer tech that's at least on par with what they have at home. This includes everything from reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi and high-definition TVs to smart room features like motion sensors that manage energy consumption.

"Additionally, energy-efficient and sustainable practices, such as using smart rooms, are becoming non-negotiable, as travellers look for convenience and sustainability combined," he added.

In InterContinental Kuala Lumpur case, he said the hotel invested heavily in next-generation amenities.

"Guests can expect features like smart toilets, touch-free facilities, and Dyson hand dryers that cut down on paper waste," he said.

Everson is particularly proud of the hotel's eco-conscious innovations.

"We have solar panels that have reduced our carbon footprint, equivalent to planting 263 trees as of October, 2024.

"Our Guest Room Management System uses sensors to adjust room temperature and lighting as guests arrive, creating a comfortable environment instantly," he added.

"The commitment to sustainability extends further with the installation of low-flow water mechanisms and a complete switch to LED lighting across the hotel, underscoring the hotel's dedication to reducing its environmental impact. These efforts are all part of InterContinental Kuala Lumpur's 'Journey to Tomorrow' a 10-year responsible business plan designed to ensure sustainable luxury," he said.

The focus on high-tech amenities isn't limited to guest rooms.

Everson said event spaces are also fully equipped with the latest technology.
