#Showbiz: 'Dukun' hits RM10mil mark at the box office

KUALA LUMPUR: Thriller Dukun continues to thrill moviegoers after 20 days, raking in a whopping RM10 million in ticket sales.

The chilling film's main actress Datin Seri Umie Aida said it was an “amazing feat” and thanked fans for publicising it on social media, and flocking to cinemas nationwide to watch it more than once.

“It’s a testament to the wonderful teamwork from all of us who were involved in this gruesome, yet original and interesting story that’s wholly Malaysian. I’m confident we’ll be seeing more sales in the days to come. Thank you so much guys!" she said in an interview today.

Dukun netted RM1.5 million on its first day of screening, and its producer Astro Shaw’s head Najwa Abu Bakar said that the impressive collection from 120 cinemas in Malaysia and Brunei was its highest to date.

Currently screening in 133 cinemas, Dukun stars Umie, Faizal Hussein, Namron, Bront Palarae, Hasnul Rahmat and Elyana Emrizal and is directed by Dain Said.

It had courted controversy after it was completed 12 years ago due to its graphic nature and macabre storyline said to be loosely based on an actual incident that contained elements of violence and superstition - the trial of bomoh Mona Fandey in the early 1990s.
