KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran actress Mak Jah has had it difficult when she had to pawn her own gold jewellery to pay her medical bills.
She said it was three years ago when she was diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer.
“Pawning my jewellery was the only option since the medical bills ran high,” she said recounting the dark episode in her life.
“It’s okay. Jewellery is replaceable, but not good health,” said the 71-year-old artiste whose full name is Maimunah Ahmad.
Mak Jah also shared that as of last April, her doctors had informed her that she was free of cancer.
“Now I’m back at work in full force, after having to decline many acting offers in the past two years due to my health condition,” she said, revealing that she also fell into depression in the first six months after she found out she had the Big C.
“Fortunately, I met an ustaz who motivated me to rise above it and fight the disease and to carry on living like before,” said the star of Mami Jarum (released in 1987) who has acted in more than 100 drama series and films.
