KUALA LUMPUR: Nadya Dean, one of Singapore's popular female hip-hop singers and songwriters, died after 11 days in a coma last Sunday.
The 27-year-old had just given birth prematurely to her second child Muhammad Haqq Nashriq on Oct 15 at the Changi General Hospital.
The Straits Times reported today that Nadya, whose real name is Nur Atiqah Nadia Abdul Kadir, suffered from eclampsia, a condition in which a person falls into a coma caused by high blood pressure due to pregnancy.
Nadya, who represented Singapore in the Karaoke World Championship 2015, last performed at a National Day concert in the Woodlands Community Club in August.
The late singer's father Dean Kassim, 58, said that his daughter had been active in sports such as kickboxing during her schooldays, but became interested in music while she was studying in the Institute of Technical Education.
"She was always keen on upgrading her skills and education, and insisted on studying for an online course for a diploma in retail management even when she was not well," he said.
Nadya is survived by her husband, musician Nashriq Sani, a two-year-old daughter Nur Arianna Nasuha, and Muhammad Haqq.
