KUALA LUMPUR: Jazz and dance music do not always go together, but Malaysia's Datuk Sheila Majid and Indonesian disco kings Diskoria made that happen yesterday night with magical results.
For the first time, Sheila teamed up with the Indonesian disco duo comprising Merdi Simanjuntak and Fadli Aat in a 90-minute musical showcase at Zepp KL, Jalan Hang Tuah here.
The 8.30pm concert themed A Time Travel With Diskoria Featuring Datuk Sheila Majid saw the trio serenade 1,700 Malaysian and Indonesian fans non-stop.
Sheila, Merdi and Fadli performed 26 songs, and they included four of Sheila's — Sinaran, Antara Anyer Dan Jakarta, Dia and Warna — which were given an upbeat and "funky" dance music style.
Diskoria played 22 of their hit singles such as Badai Telah Berlalu, Balada Insan Muda, Serenata Jiwa Lara and Pelangi Cinta to roaring applause.
The show was jointly presented by My Deteksi, Sembang Kari Entertainment and Tourism Malaysia.
My Deteksi head, Shafika Mazlan, said that it was an honour to have one of Malaysia's greatest music legends to represent the country in A Time Travel.
"Sheila is a household name in Malaysia as well as Indonesia and she is widely loved in the republic.
"Diskoria, which has entertained Malaysians twice in the past, specially chose to team up with Sheila as they have always been her big fans," she said.
Merdi said: "We are so excited to share the stage with Sheila. She is simply magical on the big stage and the three of us had a superb two hours of solid entertainment."
Fadli said that they were happy that many Malaysians came fully dressed in their retro disco best on the night of the concert.
"For those who loved Saturday Night Fever and the heydays of disco music in the 1970s, here is your chance to party the night away with us," he said.
Sheila said: "This is really making my day. It is a party like no other and I hope all of us will have a great time celebrating the best of dance music," she said.
The concert also featured dance music artiste Jemput Dengar as the opening act.
