POPULAR singer, actor, and radio announcer Asmawi Ani or Mawi, 42, is not a fan of driving.
Consequently, the Zayan FM radio announcer and former Akademi Fantasia Season 3 champion has never owned a car or obtained a driving licence.
In fact, the artiste from Felda Taib Andak in Kulai, Johor, does not plan to take a driving test any time soon, as there is "no need" for him to do so.
This is because his wife Norashikin "Ekin" Rahmat and his manager are always with him, and they are "more than capable" drivers.
"I didn't take a driver's licence test. It's not because of trauma or anything. It's just that I don't like driving," said Mawi in a recent interview.
However, Mawi admitted that he could actually drive, but only for short distances around his kampung in Felda Taib Andak.
"Even if I drive, I only hop into the family car which is always parked in front of the family home.
"In our village, I take the wheel. However, I do not drive beyond the boundaries of Felda Taib Andak, that is the task of Ekin or any of our family members," said Mawi.
Whenever Mawi goes to work or to visit friends, family, and old schoolmates, Ekin will be his driver.
"And when I go to work, I always have my trusty manager Abang Taib to take the wheel."
Mawi is following in the footsteps of his late father, Ani Ahmad.
"My late father did not like to drive either. I guess that's something I picked up from him.
"He always went out on his motorcycle and never drove a car in his life, neither did he own a motor vehicle," said Mawi.
"Whenever my father wanted to go to the bigger towns, he called for a kereta sewa (rented car) that was driven and owned by an old friend of his from Felda Taib Andak.
"If he needed to go to the clinic, or to take his children, including me, shopping in Johor Baru, Pasir Gudang or Iskandar Puteri, his friend would be the family driver."
Mawi admitted that he was not a motoring enthusiast and always "pleaded ignorance" whenever his close friends talked about cars.
"I know nothing about cars, so whenever they get into a conversation about motorsports or the latest cars in the market, their speed and design, I would just pretend to listen."
Even though Mawi has never been interested in cars, he once dreamt of winning a Perodua Kancil which he would give to one of his siblings.
"As it turned out, God gave me a little bit more — a stylish Suzuki Swift when I was the winner of Akademi Fantasia Season 3 (AF3).
"That wasn't all. God further blessed me with other beautiful cars. At Anugerah Bintang Popular Berita Harian (ABPBH), I won three cars and later gave them all to my brothers and sisters as well as close family friends," he said.
Throughout his career as a singer, Mawi has won seven cars.
In addition to the Suzuki Swift, he has won a Proton Satria Neo, Kia Sorento, and Proton Savvy with a special number plate, MAW1100.
He still owns the Suzuki Swift because it was the first car he won.
Recently, Ekin revealed that Mawi did not have a driver's licence.
Mawi and Ekin were married on Dec 21, 2008, and have a daughter, Cahaya Malaika, 12.
Mawi was met at a photography session with celebrity preacher Datuk Ustaz Kazim Elias and his fellow Zayan FM radio announcer Anas Tahir.
It was held at a hotel in the federal capital and aimed to promote the film 'Zim Zim Ala Kazim', which is currently screening in cinemas nationwide.
