#SHOWBIZ: I quit school at 13 due to poverty, says Saari Amri

KUALA LUMPUR: Renowned composer Saari Amri recently revealed that he dropped out of school at 13 due to poverty, and not because he was not a bright student.

In a recent Harian Metro report, the 58-year-old award-winning musician said his grandmother raised him in Kelantan after his parents divorced.

"Kampung life was hard then, we lived hand-to-mouth. So despite always scoring in exams, I had to quit school due to our living conditions.

"I was bullied in school for wearing old and tattered clothes and shoes. In the end, the embarrassment of being teased made me feel discouraged from continuing my studies," said Saari who had then left for Singapore to work as a menial labourer to support his family back home.

He said that the hardship he had experienced had also made him always feel grateful for what he has now.

"But I never regretted the life I had. It's what had been written by God for me, and I'm happy with my family now.

"That's all that matters. Praise be to God."
