IN a world where art is often seen as a luxury, seasoned artist Jane Tan Giok Tjeng aspires to defy convention by using her talent to inspire change and uplift those in need. At 77, the Kuala Lumpur-based Tan is already the master of her craft, but she wants to do more: To channel her passion for painting into meaningful charitable work.
This month, she's inviting us into her world with a solo retrospective exhibition titled "When Kindness Meets Kindness, the World Becomes Beautiful", running until Oct 24 at Awegallery in Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya.
This exhibition marks a poignant chapter in her artistic journey, as it is both her third and final solo show, featuring 21 stunning oil-on-canvas landscapes that reflect her deep love for nature and humanity.
CANVAS FOR CHANGE
Tan's philosophy is simple yet profound: when kindness is shared, beauty flourishes. With each brushstroke, she captures the essence of the world around her, transforming vibrant scenes into invitations for compassion.
"I hope that collectors will not only find joy in my paintings, but also take comfort in knowing that their purchases will support a worthy cause," she shares. A portion of the proceeds from this exhibition will benefit the Hua Ming Autism Society, Malaysia, an organisation dedicated to providing support for families with autistic children.
The number of autism cases in this country has been rising alarmingly, highlighting the urgent need for resources and support. The talented artist recognises this pressing issue and is committed to raising awareness through her art.
"As a society, we must do more to support those in need," emphasises Tan, advocating for greater financial backing to help families navigate the challenges of autism.
JOURNEY THROUGH ART
Born in Bandung, Indonesia, in 1947, Tan's journey is as rich as her paintings. Her family migrated to Malaysia when she was just 14, and she later studied fine art at the prestigious Chelsea School of Art in London. Influenced by masters like Chung Zheng Chuan and Yu Guoqin, Tan developed her unique oil painting techniques that blend traditional Chinese aesthetics with a contemporary touch.
Over the decades, her travels have informed her work, allowing her to draw inspiration from cultures around the globe. Each painting serves as a window into her experiences, combining bold brushwork with minimal composition to convey vibrant, impressionistic scenes.
Her works have graced numerous galleries in Malaysia, including the Malaysian National Visual Arts Gallery and the Petronas Art Gallery, and have been exhibited internationally in countries like Singapore, China and the United Kingdom. In 2016, she won first prize in the "Beautiful China in My Eyes 2016" — Year of Silk Road Tourism China Attraction Art Contest.
CALL TO ACTION
On her mission, Tan confides that she hopes to inspire both art lovers and casual observers alike to embrace kindness and contribute to a greater cause. "Art has the power to change lives," she insists, believing that each painting sold represents not just a transaction but an opportunity to make a difference.
In a world often overwhelmed by challenges, the veteran artist stands as a reminder that kindness, when met with kindness, can indeed transform the world. Her art is not merely a reflection of beauty; it is a call to action, urging us to come together in support of those who need it most.
