Honda ADV160 - An upgrade bordering on new

TOUTED as an evolution of the ADV150, Honda's new ADV160 is actually a whole new 'animal' under the somewhat familiar skin.

Although launched much to the chagrin of current ADV150 owners (and would-be owners who have not received theirs), the ADV160 is actually a necessary update.

Honda is in the process of phasing out the 150cc engines and replacing it with the new 160cc engines worldwide.

The ADV160 is a major upgrade bordering on wholly new. A new chassis, new engine and new bodywork means it shares almost nothing in common with its predecessor.

The new 156.9cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine is powered by PGM-Fi and dubbed the eSP+ (enhanced Smart Power Plus).

Its claimed power is 15.82hp at 8,500rpm and 14.7Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. This compares favourably to the ADV150, which put out 14.5hp at 8,500rpm and 13.8Nm of torque at 6,500rpm.

The seat height is lower at 780mm, while the windshield can be set to a taller position for better wind protection. The riding ergonomics are also different with the handlebars now feeling quite a bit lower.

The under seat storage is enlarged to 30 litres (ADV150: 28 litres) but fuel capacity remains at 8.1 litres.

Overall, the ADV160 is larger physically, but the more aggressive styling, LED headlight and daytime running lights mask this well. Legroom is much improved over the outgoing model as well.

A major upgrade over the ADV150 is the Honda Selectable Torque Control. The traction control system is switchable on and off and is a major safety boost for this category of scooters.

The anti-lock braking system is single-channel on the front disc brake while the rear disc is now of a wavy design. A new digital instrument panel features up front and centre and displays all relevant information via a new toggle switch in the front panel.

The ADV160, which weighs in at 133kg, comes in two colour options of Mat Charcoal Grey Metallic and Vivacity Red.

It is priced at RM12,999 (without road tax, insurance and registration).
