UM shut down not due to rally: Vice Chancellor

KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya vice-chancellor (student affairs) Prof Datuk Dr Rohana Yusoff said classes will be shut down after 4pm due to electrical improvement and repair work and not because of the rally dubbed “40 Years From University of Malaya to Jail”.

She told the New Straits Times that UM was not in emergency mode and had not given any such orders, rebutting allegations by one of the organisers, Leong Yu Sheng.

“Classes at UM are cancelled due to our electrical improvement project and we are definitely not in emergency mode. UM is still UM, there is nothing out of the ordinary and it is peaceful.

“Leong is only making up stories. He is no longer the deputy secretary of the university’s student council (PMUM) as he has already graduated with engineering degree. He just had his convocation this month.

“Leong should not even be on campus tonight as we have tighten security measures whereby only current students and staff will be allowed in,” she said.

Rohana said this event was illegal, stating that the organisers had not even submitted an application for the management to consider.

“How are we supposed to even consider approving this event when they had not even handed in their application? There was nothing to reject or approve in the first place,” she said.

In another statement, Leong had told the media that the campus would be shut down after 4pm due to the PMUM event with opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, adding that UM was entering into emergency mode.
