KUALA LUMPUR: A cafe located in the main Parliament building has been ordered to close by the Kuala Lumpur Health Department for two weeks, effective today until Nov 26.
According to the closure order, the directive was issued following an inspection which found that the cafe was unhygienic and not properly sanitised, posing a potential danger to the public.
Following this, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said he would summon all relevant parties to ascertain the actual situation.
"After this sitting, I will call all parties involved to meet with me, and tomorrow I will inform you of my findings from tonight's investigation," he said before the Ministry of Finance's committee-level winding-up session on the 2025 Supply Bill.
The decision by Johari came after Bagan member of Parliament Lim Guan Eng raised Standing Order 81(1) concerning the Select Committee on the summons issued to the Parliament cafe.
Earlier, Lim expressed concern that the cafe's failure to comply with health department regulations should not have occurred.
"If the Parliament canteen is considered unhygienic, what does that say about food safety across the country? This sends a highly negative symbolic message.
"We are here seeking guidance from Tan Sri (Johari) on how we should address this issue.
"If not, it will tarnish the image of Parliament. If the Parliament canteen itself is not clean, how can we expect food establishments across the country to be hygienic?" he said.
