KUALA LUMPUR: Police and firemen rescued a Filipino maid who was about to jump from a shophouse's balcony in Taman Segar, Cheras early morning yesterday.
The 26-year-old woman, whom police initially suspected was attempting to commit suicide, was running away from a domestic helper agent and wanted to seek help from the Philippine Embassy.
City police Criminal Investigation Department acting chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Khairy Ahrasa said in the 3.30am incident, a team of policemen on patrol was told by public members that a woman was standing on the corridor at the shophouse's first floor, and that she wanted to jump.
The policemen then notified the city Fire and Rescue Department, which immediately despatched a team of firemen to rescue the victim.
"However, the victim later clarified that she was not attempting suicide, but was trying to escape from her agent.
"After she was saved, the victim was taken to a police station where she lodged a report," he said.
Khairy said the woman told police that she was returned to the agent by her previous employer. The agent then wanted to pass her to another agent in Puchong.
He said the woman decided to make an escape attempt as she did not want to be sent to the second agent.
Khairy said police have handed the victim to the Philippine Embassy's Resource Centre in Taman Maluri, Cheras, and they are investigating if the maid was abused.
