Two died in Batu Kawan lightning strike

BUTTERWORTH: Two men died and four others were injured after they were struck by lightning at a Hindu temple in Batu Kawan here last night.

In the 7pm incident, a factory worker and a businessman were instantly killed while taking shelter from the rain at a under-construction temple at Kampung Batu Kawan.

They were identified as N. Arumugam, 42, and V. Sivaperumal, 56. Both are from Ladang Batu Kawan.

South Seberang Prai deputy police chief Deputy Superintendent Sharifuddin Abdullah said a 44-year-old labourer was reported to be critical while three others aged between 35 to 55 were stable.

The 44-year-old was identified as S. Gunasegaran, a labourer from Ladang Batu Kawan.

The three others, who were reported as stable are S. Muruges, 44, a fisherman; S. Ananthan, in his 40s; and M. Mutukumar, 32, a heavy machinery operator.

All victims are being treated at the Sungai Bakap Hospital.
