MACC submits application to make SEA-PAC an Asean entity

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has filed an application to the Asean secretary-general to make the South East Asian Parliamentarians Against Corruption (SEA-PAC), an entity in Asean.

MACC in a statement said the official application was handed to the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia on Oct 9.

The application was handed in by MACC International Relations Division head Senior Assistant Commissioner Karunanithy Y. Subbiah to the Asean Secretariat Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, Civil Society Engagements and Interaction with ASEAN Associated Entities Community Affairs Development Directorate Assistant Director Leena Ghosh.

MACC deputy commissioner (operations) Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull said the application was in line with the decision made during the 10th SEA-PAC meeting in Dec last year, when they were the chairman.

“We are confident that this effort will help create a corruption free environment in the region and improve the cooperation among member states.

“MACC and SEA-PAC members believe this development will help realise the outcome from the meeting,” he said.

Shukri added the approval from the secretariat would also allow SEA-PAC to raise any corruption issues in the region among the leaders in Asean.
