KUALA LUMPUR: A planned "shutdown" of the Sungai Besi toll gate here by a group of protesters tonight did not materialise.
Less than 50 protesters turned up to voice their disagreement against the recent hike in toll tariffs. They had attempted to block traffic from the toll booths, but strong police presence was successful in maintaining public order.
The “Shutdown Sungai Besi” protesters were led by Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, youth chief Mohd Sani Hamzan, and vice youth chief Shazni Munir Mohd Ithnin had only arrived at 11pm.
Amanah, which organised the illegal rally was then forced to only hold a small gathering just past the Kuala Lumpur-bound section of the toll gate.
The rally only lasted around 20 minutes with Salahuddin and several party members giving short speeches that were laced with criticism against the government, which they alleged as responsible behind the increase in cost of living.
No arrests were made by police as of press time but Salahuddin was believed to have given a statement to police.
