Four men arrested for impersonating cops

SEPANG: Four men were arrested at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) today for impersonating policemen and blackmailing a foreigner.

Sepang district police chief Abdul Aziz Ali said the complainant, who was a Bangladeshi, lodged a report after his brother and cousin were taken by a group of men.

“The complainant went to KLIA at 3.35am yesterday to fetch his brother and cousin from Bangladesh, who were here for a visit. They were then approached by four men who claimed that they were policemen.

“The men immediately ‘arrested’ the duo and asked the complainant to go home and prepare RM15,000 to release them.

“The complainant begged for more time so that he could get the money,” he said, adding that the impersonators were not in police uniforms.

The victim, said Aziz, later managed to get in touch with his brother, who informed that he was at a shop lot nearby a clinic and 24-hour convenience store in Puchong.

Based on the information and assistance from the complainant, Sepang Crime Investigation Department police made a series of surveillance at KLIA from midnight to 6.30am and arrested four men aged between 35 and 54 years old.

They were being held at Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi lockup.

The police also rescued the two male foreigners.

The police also seized handphones, a powerbank and a Proton Iswara.

Investigations showed that one of the detainees had five criminal records of extortion.

The detainees are remanded for four days and being investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion and Section 170 of the same act for impersonating civil servants.
