Construction worker killed in collapsing crane incident

KUALA LUMPUR: A construction worker was killed instantly when a crane collapsed at a construction site in Jalan Damansara, here, earlier today.

The 4.40pm incident saw the victim Li Yi Jia, 50, pinned by a steel frame against a concrete pillar, which is being built to support a flyover there.

City Fire and Rescue Department senior operations commander Muhammad Firdaus Khan said authorities believed that the victim and two of his colleagues were on the steel frame when it was being lifted by the crane.

"When the crane suddenly collapsed, the victim was trapped in between the steel frame and concrete pillar.

"However, his colleagues were lucky as they only fell to the ground and suffered minor injuries," he said.

Firdaus said the driver of the crane, which had tilted about 90 degrees vertically following the collapse, also sustained minor injuries.

The victim's remains were sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for post-mortem.

Firdaus said the department deployed 25 firemen from the Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Hartamas and Hang Tuah stations.
