PEKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak wants the Intelligent Community (iComm) monitoring system to be expanded in the rural areas for safety of the residents.
He said the system, developed by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (Mosti) to enable better monitoring of remote locations for safety purposes, makes full use of information and communication technology (ICT).
He said the system allows the installation of closed circuit television cameras (CCTVs) for accurate real-time remote monitoring at strategic locations in villages.
"For example, iComm could be implemented at villages in eastern Sabah such as Lahad Datu, Semporna and Sandakan.
"With CCTVs, residents can monitor if there are intruders and arrest them immediately," he said during the launch of iComm at Kampung Padang Rumbia here.
Najib also urged residents of Kampung Padang Rumbia to take advantage of iComm.
"Kampung Padang Rumbia is the first rural community in the country to benefit from this project that also aims to improve the residents socio-economic standing through ICT."
Najib said through apart from monitoring safety of the residents, iComm system also could detect an increase in the level of Sungai Pahang, thus allowing villagers to prepare for the evacuation process rather that wait for the authorities.
Also present at the launch were Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry minister Datuk Wilfred Madius Tangau, the ministry's secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur, Mimos Bhd chairman Datuk Omar Kaseh and chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah.
