RAWANG: A 13-year-old schoolboy drowned during a swim at Taman Tasik Bandar Country Homes, here, earlier today.
The 11.30am incident happened when the victim, K. Raveen Raj was swimming with five schoolmates after finishing their co-curriculum activities at their school nearby.
Rawang Fire and Rescue Station chief Halim Abu Hassan said they received a call at 11.57am.
He said 10 firemen who were dispatched to the scene arrived 11 minutes later and immediately launched a search and rescue mission.
"Our team used three techniques to find the victim, including a surface search and skin dive. We also contacted the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department divers for assistance.
"At 1.35pm, after two attempts using the skin dive technique, one of our officers found the victim at the bottom of the lake," he said when met at the scene.
He said the location where they found the victim was about three-metres in depth.
A medical team from Sungai Buloh Hospital tried to resuscitate the Form 1 student, but to no avail.
His body was sent by police to the hospital for post-mortem.
Meanwhile, the New Straits Times met with several locals at the scene, and was told that the lake was a frequent swimming spot for school students.
They said the youngsters had been warned many times against swimming there, but they did not listen.
It is learnt that the victim's mother was present during the search and rescue mission.
She was said to have been crying non-stop, before fainting upon seeing the victim's body being carried by firemen.
