KUALA LUMPUR: Nour El Sherbini became Egypt's first women's world squash champion after beating England's World No 1 Laura Massaro in the Naza Women's World Championship final in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.
The 20-year-old El Sherbini staged a stunning come back from two games down to win 6-11, 4-11, 11-3, 11-5, 11-8, sealing victory with an audacious volley drop in the corner after 62 minutes.
The win also ensured El Sherbini will displace Massaro as the world's top-ranked player when the world rankings list for May is released on Sunday.
El Sherbini, who also became the youngest world champion, was in disbelief after her amazing feat at the National Squash Centre.
"I never imagined I could do it especially after I was two games down," said El Sherbini, who also won a Citroen DS4 car to go along with cash prize of US$27,455.
"Laura is a tough player on court but I didn't want to disappoint everyone who have been supporting me including my parents and coach Amr Shabana.
"Shabana said after the second game that I had nothing to lose, to forget about the first two games and to focus on the next one. I'm happy I fought till the last point."
El Sherbini succeeds eight-time champion Nicol David, who was the previous youngers world champion in 2005, as the title holder.
For Massaro, it was her second defeat in three World Championship final appearances, having won her only title in Penang in March 2014, when the delayed 2013 edition was held.
