Umie Aida wants to land 'meaty roles'

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular actress Umie Aida, who has been riding high playing Zeenat Manisah in TV3’s hit comedy series “Mak Cun”, misses playing serious characters, which she is known for.

Her last notable appearance in such a genre was about six years ago when she acted in “Air Mata Nur Salina”, a telemovie aired on the Cerekarama slot on TV3.

“It’s been quite a long time since I appeared in a heavy drama, and please get the word out there that I’m open to take on character-driven roles. Although I must admit doing ‘Mak Cun’ had been fun and different for me,” said Umie Aida, who is also the lifestyle brand ambassador of CocoZ.Kr when met at the outlet in Sungei Wang Plaza here today.

The 43-year-old actress said she initially took up the offer to play Zeenat Manisah to prove critics wrong as many had thought that she could not play a comedic role.

“It is very satisfying to see how viewers accepted the comedic persona I played for the series. Many thought I could not give ‘life’ to such a character,” said the actress, who put on an exaggerated Northern Malay accent for Manisah.

Umie, who has just returned from a five-day filming of “Mak Cun” in Amsterdam, together with her sister Erma Fatima who plays the titular role, is currently busy focusing on her new online venture which she shares with Erma.

“After Hari Raya, we will launch a detox drink which will aid weight loss,” said the artiste on her online business.

So far, they have two products – bedak sejuk (a Malay traditional cooling rice powder) and a hair product exclusively for hijab-wearing users who want to keep their hair feeling fresh.
