KUALA LUMPUR: Police have formed a special investigation team to probe a string of cases involving foreign paedophiles who prey on Malaysian children online.
The Children's Cyber Sexual Investigation team, established early this month, is investigating cases where these paedophiles get Malaysian children, some as young as 14, to record videos for them via the Internet.
Inspector-General of police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the team made the discoveries early this year and are in the midst of tracking down these 'recruiters.'
"These recruiters are from the United States and United Kingdom. Most of the children are aged between 14 and 15.
"Their modus operandi is known as cyber sexual grooming. The recruiters will tell the children to record their videos," he said adding that police are still investigating the purpose of the video recordings as this is a new cybercrime case.
Khalid was speaking after attending the closing ceremony of a senior female officers seminar at Dewan Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, Police College in Cheras here today.
The event was closed by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
Rohani, meanwhile, said parents should keep an eye on their children's activities to prevent them from being involved in such cybercrimes.
"Although the children are home and do not mingle with outsiders, that doesn't mean that the children are safe.
"Parents have to be more vigilant and monitor their children's activities," she added.
