The former World No 1 plays Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long tomorrow for a place in Friday's quarter-final.

It was, however, the end of the road for national No 2 Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, who went down tamely 21-10, 21-19 to Germany’s Marc Zwiebler.
Independent shuttler Zulfadli Zulkiffli managed to steal one game from five-time world champion Lin Dan, but couldn’t see it through with a win as he succumbed to a 16-21, 21-18, 21-16 defeat.
In men’s doubles, independent pair Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong beat Indonesia’s Berry Angriawan-Rian Agung Saputro 21-17, 10-21, 21-15.
They will face former teammates Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong, who received a first round walkover, in the second round tomorrow.
