(Football) Zainal Abidin sacked as Selangor coach

KUALA LUMPUR: Coach Zainal Abidin Hassan was sacked by Selangor today, making him the eighth coaching casualty in the Super League this season.

The Selangor FA (FAS) took the decision to terminate his contract following the team’s 1-0 defeat to Kedah in Alor Star yesterday. It was the team’s fourth straight defeat in all competitions.

Assistant coach K. Gunalan takes over from Zainal as interim coach until FAS find a suitable candidate.

"Zainal's contract with Selangor has been terminated and Gunalan will take over as interim coach," said team manager Amirudin Shari in a statement today.

He joins Ahmad Yusof and Mike Mulvey (Terengganu), Ahmad Shahruddin Rosdi (Pahang), Jacksen Tiago (Penang), K. Rajagopal (Sarawak), K. Devan (Kelantan) and Syamsul Saad (Perak) in the list of coaches who were rested or sacked this season.

The move to sack Zainal came after Selangor FA (FAS) president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali instructed the management to make immediate changes to the coaching and management set up after the match against Kedah.

FAS will announce changes in the team management tomorrow.
