Football: Malaysia to face Singapore on Oct 7 in Causeway Challenge

SINGAPORE: Singapore is set to face Malaysia in the Causeway Challenge at the National Stadium on Oct 7 as part of their preparations for the year-end Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup, TODAYonline.com reported Wednesday.

“Singapore and Malaysia enjoy strong bilateral relations and good cooperation in many areas, including sports,” Football Association of Singapore vice-president Lim Kia Tong was quoted as saying.

“The beautiful game of football has been and will continue to be a very substantive platform in cementing this good cooperation. Football matches between both countries are always special for our fans and players,” Lim said.

The news portal said the last time Singapore faced Malaysia was at the Suzuki Cup in November 2014 when Malaysia triumphed 3-1 at the National Stadium.

The Causeway Challenge, their 65th battle, is held six weeks ahead of the AFF Suzuki Cup which kicks off on Nov 19.

The Lions are ranked 159th by FIFA and the Tigers, 167th.

Nonetheless, records show Malaysia have won 22 times and Singapore, 19 times. They have drawn 23 times.

“Both countries share a unique bond and deep historical ties, and matches between Singapore and Malaysia have always attracted thousands of fans to the stadium,” Lions vice-captain Harris Harun was quoted as saying.

“Therefore, our Lions – including several who will be participating in their first Causeway Challenge – are looking forward with much excitement to the Singapore vs Malaysia match,” he said.
