Zahid to chair debate at UN Security Council

NEW YORK: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will chair a debate at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) here on Aug 23.

The debate on "Challenges in addressing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery, related materials, equipment and technology to non-state actors" is part of Zahid's five-day working visit to the United States from Aug 22 to 26.

It also coincides with Malaysia holding the rotating presidency of the UNSC this month.

Leadership of the UNSC is rotated among the five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members in alphabetical order.

Malaysia last held the UNSC presidency in June last year.

Malaysia's term as a non-permanent member of the UNSC began on Jan 1 last year, and will end on Dec 31.

This will be Zahid's third official visit to the US since he was appointed deputy prime minister last year.
