KUALA LUMPUR : Barisan Nasional (BN) has unanimously agreed to appoint Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the coalition's new deputy chairman.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the motion to appoint Zahid was proposed by MCA and was supported by the MIC.
"We have decided to appoint Zahid as the new BN deputy chairman, in accordance with article 8(3B) of the BN constitution.
"The motion was proposed by the MCA, supported by the MIC and it has been unanimously agreed by all," he said after chairing the BN supreme council meeting today.
The Umno Supreme Council had, on June 24, sacked former BN deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin for breaking party rules, when he shared a stage with opposition leaders to attack the party leadership.
Najib, who is also the Prime Minister, said Umno treasurer Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak has been appointed as BN treasurer.
UMNO vice president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Kelantan Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed would be representing Umno in the BN supreme council.
Present at today's meeting were BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, MIC president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam and Sarawak BN chairman Tan Sri Adenan Satem.
