Bangladeshi imam held for ransom freed, four Myanmar nationals arrested

GEORGE TOWN: Penang police detained four Myanmar nationals believed to be involved in the abduction of a Bangladeshi imam from the Butterworth bus station last Wednesday.

All four were nabbed during a raid on an apartment in Gelugor at about 2pm today.

State criminal investigation department chief Datuk Razaruddin Husain said the 46-year-old imam was kept in the apartment as a hostage.

"The suspects had demanded RM125,000 in ransom money from the victim's family and friends.

"Following a tip-off and surveillance, we managed to track and detain the suspects and they will be investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person," he said.

It is learnt that the imam was waiting for a bus to Kuala Lumpur before he was approached by the suspects who approached him in a car and pulled him into the vehicle.
