43 Myanmar nationals held for immigration offences in Penang

GEORGE TOWN: Forty-three Myanmar nationals were arrested during raids for immigration violations yesterday (Oct 6).

The state Immigration Department had raided premises frequented by Myanmar nationals — including three eateries, a barber, a mini mart and a reflexology centre — around Komtar.

On Facebook, the department said the raids were carried out following complaints that the foreigners were not only dominating residential areas but also the state's administrative area.

"From the 70 foreigners checked, including workers and customers, 43 were detained for offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63.

"They comprise 28 men and 15 women, all Myanmar, aged between 23 and 45."

The department said during checks on an eatery managed by illegal foreigners, the premises was found to be unhygienic with cockroaches loitering around the food.

"Fourteen summonses were issued for the foreigners to give their statements."

The department said it would also investigate the owner of the businesses and premises.
