ALOR STAR: A 24-year-old man has been remanded for seven days beginning today to facilitate an investigation into a statutory rape case involving a 12-year-old girl.
The remand order against the unemployed man was issued by Alor Star Court deputy registrar Dalilah Ismail.
Kota Star police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin said the man, who was arrested in his house at Jalan Langgar, in Taman Setia Jaya, yesterday, allegedly gave syabu (methamphetamine) to the 12-year-old girl and raped her on several occasions.
The suspect was believed to have befriended the girl via the social networking app, WeChat, several months ago before they met.
The girl's mother discovered their relationship several days ago and took her to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital for medical checks. The woman then lodged a police report on the matter.
