Huge sinkhole opens up in Likas town

KOTA KINABALU: A huge sinkhole has opened up in the middle of Jalan Tuaran Likas, here, causing traffic congestion with vehicles slowing down to falling in.

It was learnt that the sinkhole began to form early this morning. Staff from the Public Works Department have been dispatched to assess the situation.

A department staff said they had been inundated with calls from the public since afternoon, informing them of the sinkhole located near the Survey Hypermarket in Likas.

“Officers and staff have been sent to inspect the situation and fix the problem,” said the staff.

A department officer in charge of sewerage said the sinkhole was formed due to a broken sewer connection. The sinkhole is estimated to be about five metres deep.

“We detected the problem yesterday and erected a barricade around the affected area. Cracks were visible but the whole section caved in probably about 2am or 3am.

“The Public Works Department and Kota Kinabalu City Hall are now meeting to determine the next course of action,” he said, adding that it may take a week or two to rectify the problem.
