GEORGE TOWN: Following a recent upgrade, Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm is no longer just an insect sanctuary, but a refuge for a range of reptiles.
With the addition of a new “grassland territory”, visitors can now view and learn more about 11 species of small reptiles at the facility in Teluk Bahang here.
Entopia chief executive Officer Joseph Goh said the makeover cost only about RM80,000 as most of the landscaping and work were done by in-house staff.
“The new trail, named Dragon Path, will add value to visitors’ experience, as they are able to freely explore the open-concept garden, filled with live exhibits, at close range,” he said.
Among the small reptiles on display are the Veiled Chameleon and the Bearded Dragon. Visitors can touch the Bearded Dragon, under the watchful eyes of the farm’s Nature Activities staff.
As for insects, Goh said Entopia is home to ten species of dragonflies and damselflies, among others.
“(We also display) dragonfly and damselfly larvae,” he added.
The fireflies section was also revamped, and now affords visitors a clearer view of the rare insect’s breeding process.
The same goes for the main attraction – the butterfly farm – which affords visitors insight into the breeding process and life cycle of the beautiful insect.
The butterfly pupae, which hang in numerous rows on metal rods, are truly a remarkable sight. Visitors will be able to spot a range of hues, including the bright green pupae tinged with gold; the bright gold-yellow pupae with black specks; the jade-like pastel green and pink pupae; and the bronze-gold pupae.
